Not dangerous for dogs and cats, but should be used with caution
Potatoes for Dogs
Potatoes are safe for dogs if prepared properly. Boiled or baked potatoes without added salt, oil, or spices can be a beneficial addition to their diet. Potatoes contain vitamins B6 and C, potassium, and fiber, which may help support digestive health and the immune system. However, raw potatoes, especially green ones, contain solanine, a toxic substance that can cause poisoning in dogs, so raw potatoes should never be given.
It's important to serve potatoes in moderation, as they are high in carbohydrates, and too much can lead to weight gain. Potatoes should not be a primary food source for dogs but rather a rare supplement to their diet.
Potatoes for Cats
Potatoes can also be safe for cats if they are properly prepared. Boiled or baked potatoes without salt, oil, or spices can be offered as an occasional treat. However, cats are obligate carnivores, and their digestive system is not designed to handle large amounts of carbohydrates. Raw potatoes, especially green ones, contain solanine, which can be toxic to cats and cause poisoning.
Potatoes should be given to cats in very small amounts and only as an occasional supplement to their regular diet. Cats’ primary food should be meat-based, and potatoes should not replace the essential meat components of their nutrition.
