Not Dangerous for Dogs and Cats, but Can Be Harmful in Large Quantities
Beetroot for Dogs
Beetroot can be a beneficial addition to a dog's diet when prepared correctly. It contains vitamins A, B, and C, along with minerals like potassium and phosphorus. Beetroot can help improve digestion and strengthen the immune system.
It should be served cooked or baked without added salt, oil, or spices. It’s important to offer beetroot in small quantities, as it contains oxalic acid, which can negatively impact a dog’s kidneys if consumed in excess.
Beetroot for Cats
Beetroot is not recommended for cats due to its high oxalic acid content, which can contribute to kidney stone formation. Even small amounts of beetroot may cause digestive upset or worsen a cat’s overall health. Cats are obligate carnivores, and beetroot cannot replace their primary meat-based diet.
