Kazakhstan 2025: 1850 animals and one common goal

From June 17 to July 11, 2025, the team of Shunn u Katun Veterinary Clinic took part in an international charitable campaign for free neutering (castration) of dogs and cats in Kazakhstan. Over the course of 25 days, our team worked in six locations — Tekeli, Taldykorgan, Talgar, Mynbaeva (DOS), Zhezkazgan, and Balkhash — and performed 1850 surgeries. These were stray and owned animals, male and female, cats and dogs — each with its own story, each in need of care.

Castration is more than just a surgery. It’s a responsible and humane way to control the animal population. It prevents unwanted offspring, reduces aggression, and helps stop the spread of infections. For stray animals, it is often the only way to remain in their environment without conflict with humans. Castration means compassion, prevention of suffering, and a longer, healthier life.

The campaign was made possible thanks to the support of international organizations — Fondation Brigitte Bardot (France) and Tierschutz Entwicklungshilfe e.V. (Germany) — and the collaboration of local institutions, volunteers, and municipal authorities. The international team included skilled surgeons, an anesthesiologist, assistants, and coordinators — many of whom gave up their vacations to join the cause. All participants worked voluntarily and without pay.

Shunn u Katun Clinic was represented by two team members. Surgeon Anna Pinkus performed hundreds of operations with professionalism and care. Clinic director Vasily Malyukov took on the role of coordinator and hands-on volunteer, helping both with logistics and with daily animal care. We are proud to have been part of this mission.

In addition to the surgeries, local vets and volunteers received training and practical experience to continue the work independently — ensuring that the impact of the campaign will last.

We thank everyone who stood with us — those who helped, supported, and simply offered kind words.

And of course, we thank the animals who trusted us. We did our best for each of them.

🐾 Together, we make the world better — one operation at a time.
